the last place i remember
Growing out of concern for the well-being of Alzheimer’s patients facing institutionalization and the widening of medical aid in dying regulation, the Lily attempts to provide a space for the last hours of a person’s life. The space is a celebration of a person’s journey on Earth, and its design wants to help family members create meaningful and lasting memories of their loved one in an otherwise difficult period of their lives. This new space is to act as a modern-day sanctuary, welcoming many uses but built for the purpose of aiding patients in their transition from living and to passing. In its daily use, it serves as a non-denominational spiritual space for patients, caretakers, family members...
This prototypical space, perched on Mount-Royal near the former Shriners Children’s hospital, would be the counterpart of a dedicated home for those suffering from cognitive disorders and hypothetically occupying the existing building. The patients would interact with the Lily on a regular basis, familiarizing themselves unconsciously with the space that will accompany their final moments. Creating a shield from the outside world, the building shelters the activities within and nests the space within the woods of Mount-Royal. Its arrangement, a journey in itself, attempts to be a modern gateway in the face of the greatest common denominator.

Issue d'un soucis pour le bien-être de patients atteints de la maladie d'Alzheimer faisant face à l'institutionalisation et l'élargissement de l'aide médicale à mourir, the Lily tente d'offrir un espace pour les dernières heures de la vie d'une personne. Cet espace est une célébration du parcours de ses utilisateurs sur Terre, et sa conception tente d'aider les membres de sa famille à créer des souvenirs heureux et éloquents de leurs êtres chers dans une période de leur vie particulièrement difficile. Ce nouvel espace agit comme un sanctuaire moderne, accueillant plusieurs usages mais dont la raison d'être est d'aider la transition des patients de la vie à la mort. Dans ses usages quotidiens, the Lily sert d'espace spirituel séculaire pour les patients, le personnel, les proches...
Cet espace prototypique, perché sur le Mont-Royal près de l'ancien Hopital pour enfant Shriners, agirait comment contre-partie d'un centre hypothetique habitant l'édifice patrimonial et désservant les personnes souvrant de troubles neurocognitifs. Les patients interagiraient avec the Lily sur une base régulière, se familiarisant inconsciemment avec cet espace qui les accompagnera jusqu'à la fin. L'édifice créé une coquille contre le monde extérieur et protège les activités qui s'y déroulent, niché dans les boisés du Mont-Royal. Son aménagement, un parcours en soi, tente d'agir comme un portail modern face au plus grand dénominateur commun.

"I’ve also chosen a site, a site which could continue to serve for my post-academic research. I’ve chosen to propose this new centre to take over the former home of the Shriners Children’s Hospital, a lot perched on Mount-Royal near the Montreal General Hospital. This building already contains many of the amenities required by a healthcare facility, and its surrounding land provides a natural setting so often requested by patients for their last moments. Its proximity to the General Hospital also has the implication that the Lily could cater to MAiD patients out of their palliative care."

"J'ai aussi choisi un site, un site qui serait maintenant pour ma recherche post-académique. J'ai choisi de proposer que le nouveau centre de soins spécialisés reprenne l'édifice de l'ancien Hopital Shriners pour enfants, un lot perché sur le Mont-Royal à proximité de l'Hopital Général de Montréal. Cet édifice comporte déjà plusieurs services nécessaires dans un établissement de soins, et le terrain qui l'entoure offre l'espace naturel si souvent demandé par des patients palliatifs pour leurs derniers moments. Sa proximité à l'Hôpital Général introduit aussi la possibility que the Lily soit utilisé aussi par les patients demandant l'AMM dans leurs soins palliatifs."

"My proposal for this modern sanctuary is based on the research from the first eight weeks of the semester, and architectural devices attempting to reduce the adverse symptoms of cognitive disorders such as anxiety and confusion. Some explanations regarding this research can be found in the document I’ve placed in the chat for your perusal. [See below.] The Lily is intended to be a flexible space, used by residents during their stay as well as for their last few hours on earth. An assembly space, a concert hall, a space for prayer. Acting as a non-denominational chapel in the landscape it creates a private and contemplative space for spiritual use. The tripartite arrangement of rooms allows for gentle transitions and a series of contrasts facilitating navigation and use, while providing more private spaces for care practitioners or medical personnel. A non-descript building from the outside, its interiors appear as carved out of the concrete as the dip in the rock. The Lily is set within the mountain, in a dip in the slope and surrounded by trees, using the natural features to protect and shelter. It uses its mass as a damper for light, sound, distraction, for overstimulation of a fragile brain. It’s cardinal orientation also ensures that should a patient desire, the room can be flooded with light yet remain controlled, without removing the delight of direct sunlight through an oculus practiced in the roof. For the intended primary practice of this space, families and loved ones are invited to tailor the space to the life and journey of the patient, to call back memories perhaps lost or fuzzy, to incite positive feelings from a confused or anxious person. We can explore the space through their perspective, their life."

"Ma proposition pour ce sanctuaire moderne est basé sur la recherche des huit premières semaines de la sessions et sur des méthodes architecturales tentant de réduire les symptômes négatifs des troubles neurocognitifs comme l'anxiété et la confusion. Des explications sur cette recherche sont disponible dans le document que j'ai placé dans le chat pour votre étude. [voir ci-bas] The Lily se veut un espace flexible, utilisé par les résidents durant leur séjour tout comme pour les dernières heures de leur vie; un point de rassemblement, une salle de concert, un espace de prière... Elle agit comme une chapelle non-confessionnelle dans le paysage et créé un espace privé et contemplatif pour usgae spirituel. L'arrangement triptyque des pièces permet des transitions plus douces et une série de contrastes facilitant la navigation, tout en créant des espaces séparés pour les donneurs de soins et le personnel médical. Malgré un extérieur assez minimaliste, l'intérieur parait creusé dans le béton comme la clairière dans la forêt. The Lily est ancrée dans la montagne, sur un plateau dans la pente et entouré d'arbres, utilisant les caractéristiques naturelles pour protéger et abriter. L'édifice utilise sa masse comme tampon pour la lumière, le son, les distractions, un tampon à la surstimulation d'un cerveau fragile. Son orientation cardinale permet aussi d'assurer que l'espace peut être baignée de lumière toujours controllée tout en permettant de bénéficier de lumière directe provenant d'un oculus pratiqué au toit. Pour l'usage principal de ce bâtiment, les familles et êtres aimés sont invités à personaliser l'espace à la vie et au parcours du patient, pour ramener à la surface des souvenirs peut-être effacés ou flous, pour inciter des émotions positives chez une personne confuse ou anxieuse. Nous pouvons explorer cet espace à travers leur perspective, leur vie."

The space was explored by the creation of animated storylines, based on cases related by a palliative care specialist of real-world MAiD patients, and the last based on my grandmother. Below is the result of these animations. Sound is encouraged.
L'espace a été exploré par la création d'animation d'histoires, basées sur des cas qui m'ont été relaté par un spécialiste en soins palliatif, des cas réels de patients ayant recours à l'AMM, et le dernier basé sur l'expérience de ma grand-mère. Ci-bas est le résulat de ces animations. Le son est encouragé.
